What Are the Disadvantages of Fat Freezing?

Fat freezing can reduce selected pockets of fat, but it has limitations, downtime and potential complications worth understanding before booking.

It is not a weight-loss treatment

Cryolipolysis targets localised subcutaneous fat. It does not treat obesity, visceral fat or the underlying causes of weight change. A consultation should establish whether the area is suitable.

Results are gradual and variable

Visible change can take several weeks or months and may be subtle. Some people need more than one session; others may see little benefit. No clinic can guarantee a particular number of centimetres lost.

Common temporary side effects

Redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, tingling, numbness and temporary altered sensation may occur. The treated area can feel uncomfortable for days or weeks.

An uncommon but important complication

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) is a recognised complication in which the treated fat area becomes larger and firmer instead of shrinking. It may require medical or surgical management and should be discussed during informed consent.

Other potential risks

Uneven contours, skin changes, prolonged pain and cold-related injury are possible. Cryolipolysis may be unsuitable for people with certain cold-sensitivity disorders, hernias in the area or particular medical conditions.

Will it tighten loose skin?

Fat freezing does not reliably tighten significant loose skin. Reducing fat can sometimes make existing laxity more noticeable, so it is important to discuss the overall shape you hope to achieve.

Questions to ask at consultation

Ask about device suitability, contraindications, expected improvement, full course cost, alternatives and how complications are handled. A good consultation should include the possibility of choosing no treatment.
